Managing Host, iSCSI, or RAID Groups

This help page provides information about the different types of groups  that can be managed within Navigator 2 and how and when to use them.  It contains the following topics:

Overview

You can refer to and configure groups (logical resources) in an array:

  1. In the Arrays window, Select the array you want to manage.

  2. Click Show and Configure Array to display the array data and the Explorer tree.

  3. In the Explorer tree click Groups.  The Groups window is displayed. The window displays the list of groups that are described in the following table.

Type of Group

Description

Host Group

Host Groups (host storage domains) are a feature of LUN Manager that allow your array to be more easily managed. Hosts (WWNs) can be assigned to a Host Group and then the desired logical units can be associated with each host group.

RAID Group

A RAID group is a group of disk drives that constructs single or multiple parity groups. A logical unit (LU) is created in a RAID group.

iSCSI Target

An iSCSI target is a logical entity that associates a group of hosts communicated with iSCSI and logical units in the array.  iSCSI Targets is displayed if the Array has iSCSI interface to communicate with hosts.

Using Host Groups    (back to top)

Host Groups (host storage domains) are a feature of LUN Manager that allow your array to be more easily managed. Hosts (WWNs) can be assigned to a Host Group and then the desired logical units can be associated with each host group. For more information on setting up a host group for Fibre Channel, see the Help page on setting up host groups.

Using RAID Groups          (back to top)

A RAID group is a group of disk drives that constructs single or multiple parity groups.  A RAID groups can be considered as the actual RAID container for data protection, and the parity group as a partition of the container.  This way, multiple LUNs can be created from each RAID group, and ported out to the same or different servers (hosts). This allows granularity in LUN sizes being obtained from the RAID group. See the help page Managing RAID Groups for detailed information.

NOTE: RAID group names and the maximum number of RAID groups are pre-defined at the factory and are set according to the product model.

Using iSCSI Targets           (back to top)

An iSCSI target is a logical entity that associates a group of hosts communicated with iSCSI and logical units in the array.  The iSCSI Targets menu item is displayed only if the Array has an iSCSI interface to communicate with hosts and according to the model of the array.

Using the LUN Manager storage feature, you can add, modify, or delete iSCSI targets during system operation.  For example, if an additional disk is installed or an additional host is connected in your iSCSI Network (i.e. IP-SAN), an additional iSCSI target can be created for them with LUN Manager. It is not necessary to reboot the array after adding, modifying, or deleting iSCSI targets with LUN Manager. See the help page Managing iSCSI Targets for detailed information.
