Updating the Firmware

This help page provides information to guide you through the procedure to update the firmware in an array. It contains the following topics:

Overview

NOTE: The procedures below describe the use of the Update Firmware dialog box. This is only part of the process.  Click here to see the procedures in the Firmware window  You must complete those procedures first.

Using the Basic Tab   (back to top)

The Basic tab provides three operational choices:

  1. Transfer and update firmware (this is the default choice)

  2. Transfer firmware (downloads the firmware to the array but does not install it on the controllers)

  3. Update the firmware (installs the firmware from the array to the controllers)

  1. Select one of the three tasks or leave the default task selected.  If you select either of the first two options, you must also provide the path from which to download the new firmware.

  2. If downloading the firmware, enter the path or use the browser box to locate the firmware on the internet.

  3. Click OK. A confirmation dialog box that lists the current version of the firmware and the new version you have selected.  It also displays a notice explaining that performance of the array will be degraded during the update process.

NOTE:
Updating the firmware uses system resources and can reduce the performance of the array. Once you start the update process, you cannot stop it, because the array cannot communicate with Navigator 2 while the array is updating the firmware.

The update can take from 6 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the firmware, the speed set to process the update (see the Advanced tab) and the I/O requests being made to the array.

HDS recommends that you choose a time when I/O requests are at a minimum to update the firmware. Review and change the settings in the Advanced tab as needed before starting the update.

CAUTION! Do not cancel the process or perform I/O operations while the firmware is being upgraded.

  1. To update the firmware, click the verifying that you have read the notice and click Confirm.  A message box is displayed.  This message box remains open during the entire time that the update is in process, and displays a flashing bar at the bottom of the box showing when the update is being made.  When the update is complete, the flashing bar stops and a message saying that the update is complete is displayed in the dialog box.

  2. Click Close to exit the window and return to the Firmware window.

Using the Advanced Tab   (back to top)

The Advanced tab provides three operational settings:

  1. Start this operation only if the array is not busy.  This is enabled by default.

  2. Check revision (Recommended. This setting prevents a previous version of the firmware  from being accidentally installed)

  3. Interval to transfer parts of firmware to array: Range = 3 to 60 seconds (default range is 3 seconds). This sets the time between

  4. Change the above settings as desired.

  5. Click OK to save the changes and return to the Firmware window.
