INSTALL FAQ

Q: Do I need to deinstall old DS Command-line Interface (CLI) versions before running this install?
A: Yes.

Q: Do I need to deinstall old ESS CLI (2105 CLI) versions before running this install?
A: No, however, you cannot install DS CLI on the machine that contains ESS CLI (2105 CLI).

Q: Do I need to have Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed before I can run this install?
A: Yes. DS CLI does not bundle any JVM in the installation package. Therefore, before installing DS CLI,
you need to have JRE already installed on your target machine.

Q: What are the JRE requirements for the DS CLI.
A: IBM Java 1.4.2 is the preferred JRE on Windows, Linux, and AIX. IBM Java 1.4.2 can be found
on this CD. For other platforms, please obtain the platform-specific JRE 1.4.2 from
an appropriate vendor. Java version 1.4.2 is strongly recommended although DS CLI can support
any Java 1.4.1 and above. (Please note that OS/400 and OpenVMS have their own Java requirements).

Q: How do I install DS CLI on <x> operating system?
A: Most supported operating systems have a setup*.* file. For instance,
AIX users can install using setupaix.bin; Windows users can install
using setupwin32.exe. If you are running a *NIX which does not have
its own setup file, you can run setupgenericunix.sh. However, see below
for exception information about Novell and OS/400.

Q: How do I install DS CLI on Novell?
A: See the DS CLI User's Guide for details. You will have to run setupwin32.exe
on a Windows machine which has mounted a Novell drive, and use that to
   install on the Novell drive.

Q: What are the prerequisites for installing DS CLI on OS/400?
A: You must have the following:
	The latest Java group ptf
5722SS1 option 34 Digital Certificate manager
5722AC3 *base Crypto Access Provider 128-bit
5722DG1 *BASE IBM HTTP Server for iSeries
	5722JV1 6 Java Developer Kit 1.4

Q: What are the Java runtime requirements for the DS CLI on OS/400
A: To run the DS CLI, the default runtime environment for the job must be Java 1.4.2
This default can be set at the system level or the job level by using a systemdefault.properties
file. The iSeries information center should be referred to for more details.

Q: How do I install DS CLI on OS/400?
A: You can install from any machine which is both network-attached to the
OS/400 box and which is a supported platform for DS CLI. To run the installer,
run the appropriate installer for the *client*, but add the argument
'-os400' (no quotes). The installer will prompt you for a machine name,
username, and password. (If you prefer, you can provide this information
on the command line with '-os400 <machine> <user> <password>' (no quotes)).
You can also pass other arguments, such as -console or -is:javahome, to the
installer as well. So, for example, if you have a Linux box attached to
the OS/400, you can install the DS CLI on the OS/400 by running the following
   command on the Linux box:
	setuplinux.bin -os400
If you needed to specify both -console and -is:javahome (and you wanted to
provide the OS/400 login information on the command line), the full command
   line would be:
	setuplinux.bin -console -is:javahome <javaDir> -os400 <os400machine> <user> <password>

Q: The install function asks for the system name, userid and password, but after entering the
   information, nothing happens.
A: Check that the iSeries Access file and database servers are active on the iSeries.
To view the servers, go into operations navigator -> network->servers->iSeries Access.
A common reason they may not be active is that the QSERVER subsystem is not active, or host
   servers are not started.

Q: Where is the DS CLI installed?
A: The installer lets you choose where the DS CLI gets installed. However, the
installer will provide a good default. For instance, on Windows, the
default is "C:\Program Files\IBM\DScli" or equivalent, and on AIX the
   default is "/opt/ibm/dscli".

Q: How can I run installer without a GUI?
A: Any installer (even Windows) can be run in console mode. To do so, pass
the -console argument to the installer:
	setupwin32.exe -console
	setupgenericunix.sh -console
The console mode will give you all the same panel as the GUI, but will
   present them in text mode.

In addition, you can run the installer in silent mode, accepting all
defaults. To do this, pass the -silent argument to the installer:
	setupwin32.exe -silent
	setupaix.bin -silent

Q: It says that it can't find a JVM, and asks me to use -is:javahome. Is this
   normal?
A: Yes. The installer is a Java application. It will automatically search in
certain well-known locations for supported JVMs. If it cannot find a JVM,
or if the JVM is an unsupported version, then it will abort and ask you
to specify -is:javahome. Run the installer again, providing the path to
   the JVM.
	setuplinux.bin -is:javahome /opt/ibm-Java-whatever/java/bin
NOTE: If you use this argument, the installer will attempt to use whatever
JVM you specify, even if it is an unsupported version.

See the User's Guide for more details.

Q: What JVMs will run automatically (without -is:javahome)?
A: If the installer can find a 1.4.1 or 1.4.2 JVM, then it should run without
-is:javahome. If you have some other version of JVM, or if the installer
can't find the directory where the JVM is installed, then -is:javahome
   will be required.
