Configure Rogue AP Detection and/or Mitigation
| Step 1 |
Turn Rogue AP Detection on...
Rogue AP Detection is a powerful tool for securing your wireless network. A Rogue AP is an AP that is not known to you or authorized by you. Meru Networks Rogue AP Detection uses the excess capacity in your network to scan channels and search for unauthorized access points. Click on the title of this step, or go to Detailed / Security Management / Rogue AP Management / Global Settings. The first line lets you turn detection on or off. The second line lets you choose how you want to handle discovered rogues. You can choose to mitigate, or disrupt, the rogue APs, either by affecting all APs not already known to you in your Allow list, or those you explicitly want to disprupt by putting them in your Block list. Leave the other settings to default unless you need to change them. Next, we will populate the Block list. You need not do this if you just set the system to block all unknown APs. Ordinarily, however, you should probably block only specific APs, as alarms for them are raised and you verify that this is an AP that you can not unplug and should not be in your area. Click on OK on the popup window to move to the next step, when done. |
|
| Step 2 |
Now, you can add the BSSIDs of all of the APs you wish to disrupt explicitly, by their address. The BSSID is the unique, Ethernet MAC address that the AP uses to advertise who it is. Click on the title of this step, or go to Detailed / Security Management / Rogue AP Management / Blocked APs, and click Add. Enter the BSSID of the APs you want. If you have more than one, after clicking OK, click on the title to this step again, until you have entered your entire list. Click on OK on the popup window to move to the next step, when done. |
|
| Step 3 |
Make Exceptions to Allow APs
Finally, if you need to, you can mention some APs to explicitly allow, even though they are foreign to your system. Examples are for neighbors' APs, if you wish to otherwise disrupt every other AP in the same region. Click on the title of this step, or go to Detailed / Security Management / Rogue AP Management / Allowed APs, and click Add. Enter the BSSID of the APs you want. If you have more than one, after clicking OK, click on the title to this step again, until you have entered your entire list. Click on OK on the popup window to finish. |
